Most historical accounts demonstrate that the rugged computer niche was largely developed by the industry leader, Panasonic. The Toughbooks line of rugged mobile computers were designed originally to meet the needs of the military services.

The innovation of rugged computers began over twenty years ago with the growing demand for mobile notebook computers designed for tough conditions. This has resulted in the now well-known brand name of Panasonic Toughbook.

The general consumer now also enjoys the benefits of laptop computers fabricated to withstand the knocks and bumps that are destined to happen when carrying a portable computer about. Just as importantly, portable computers needed to be designed to have the power to operate conditions or the surrounding environment being encountered.

Many people think that rugged laptops and rugged notebooks are the same thing. Notebook computers are actually smaller than laptops, but laptops are probably more popular. Even smaller rugged computers are beign introduced to the marketplace that are being described as mini-laptops, netbooks, and sometimes sub-notebooks.

Also, many new computer brands are being expanded to compete with the original Panasonic Toughbook computers. These ruggedized, semi rugged, and fully rugged computers can match or outperform the various certifications, like the MIL SPEC 810F military standards that now are commonplace.
These designs oftentimes boast spill-proof LCD displays and keyboards, magnesium casings, and secure hard drives and ports amongst other features. Rugged computers furnish more protection, but at the same time allow for the ease-of-use linked with portable computing.
